Planning/Zoning Board: February 8th
At the February 8 meeting of the Planning and Zoning Board, the application for a D4 variance and bulk variances, which was presented at the January 11 meeting and tabled for further consideration at the February 8 meeting, was rescheduled for the March meeting of the Board. There being no other applications to be reviewed, the meeting was open for public comments.
About a dozen people were present. They came because they had learned that the Board was considering creating a layover zone for the Bl district that would allow for a hotel; they wanted to be heard on the issue. The majority of the comments expressed dissatisfaction with the perceived lack of communication from the Board about issues such as possible zoning for a hotel. For example, the fact that the subject was being considered was never published in any meeting agenda. Many attendees, especially nonresident / seasonal homeowners who drove to Avalon expressly for this meeting, pressed for live streaming of the Board’s meetings. There was no commitment for live streaming.
The Board indicated that it is in the very early stages of considering a layover zone. The Board’s attorney and engineer are going to prepare a list of items for the Board to take into consideration in imagining what a layover zone might look like. It could take them one or two months to create this document. Thereafter, the Board will develop a proposal to be presented at a special meeting for public comments.
