Borough Council: August 14

Avalon Borough Council met for their regularly scheduled meeting on August 14, 2024.  The following issues of general interest were addressed at the meeting:

  1. Two videos were presented to illustrate the failure of the 7th Street outfall pipe and the need to relocate the pipe.  These videos are available on the Borough's website in the archived YouTube recording of the August 14th meeting.  (Note: Public comments were given on this topic at the end of the meeting during the Public Comment period.)

  2. Police Chief Jeffrey Christopher addressed Council and reported on the letter for state officials that he has developed in relation to the Juvenile Justice Reform Act.  Since 2019 NJ State Law has tied the hands of local law enforcement in addressing the use of marijuana and alcohol by juvenile's 20 years of age and younger  The Chief provided a copy of his 15 page letter to Council.  Council proposed writing a similar letter to state officials on the subject.

  3. NJPACT/REAL estate plan currently under consideration would have a significant impact on building codes in Avalon by requiring codes to be based on estimated sea levels in the year 2100.  A post on the Borough’s website available here contains some additional information and an additional link to County information (available here) developed to help the public understand the potential impacts.  All jurisdictions in the County are aligning quickly to make prominent their opposition to the proposals.

  4. Bids for work on the Bay Park Marina were opened on August 12, 2024.  It is hoped that a contract can be awarded and construction to start as soon as possible after the end of the summer season.

  5. Borough Administrator Scott Wahl will attend a virtual meeting on August 19th at 2:00 PM to discuss public access along the shore.
