Avalon Borough Council met for their regularly scheduled meeting on July 24, 2024. The following issues of general interest were addressed at the meeting:
Peter Lomax (of Lomax Consulting) gave a detailed presentation to Council about NJ’s proposal for Resilient Environment and Landscapes (REAL). This proposal would require building codes to meet requirements based on estimated sea level conditions 74.5 years into the future. This would have a major impact in Avalon and Cape May County. Due to delayed action at the state and county level, Avalon Property Tax bills were mailed late on July 24. Therefore a grace period extending the due date for the August 2024 payment has been set for August 19.
Proposed correspondence to be addressed to the governor and legislature dealing with to the Juvenile Justice Reform Act has been deferred to a future meeting.
The bocce ball court at 39th Street has been repaired and drainage issues addressed by Public Works.
Avalon is one of 12 communities in the country which as a 35% reduction in Flood Insurance. There will be a public meeting on August 15th at 5:00 PM in the Council Chambers at Borough Hall to present information on flood insurance.
A few property owners addressed Council regarding their concerns about boat slip assignment at the Avalon Fishing Marina and the proposed relocation of an outfall pipe. Property owners have expressed the same concerns at several past meetings.
