Borough Council: November 13

Council held the regularly scheduled sessions on Monday, November 13, 2023. The following issues of interest were addressed:

  1. EMS Director Kevin Scarpa addressed Council to explain the Borough's support of the annual September event know as Run For the Fallen.  The Fire Company has provided lunch and shelter during inclement weather to participants, and the organization presented Council with a plaque recognizing the support of the Fire and Police Departments over the years.

  2. DISH Wireless is replacing Sprint, and has signed a lease with the Borough for use of a portion of the 38th Street water tower.  The initial lease is for a period of five years at the rate of $36,000 per year, and will support wireless communications service in the area.

  3. The new water meters installed in Avalon provide a mobile app and website portal for customer remote monitoring of water usage levels and trends.  Check the Borough website here for details.

  4. Yard sale permits are provided by the Borough, with the proceeds benefiting the Garden Club.  The Garden Club's Annual Yard Sale coincides with the Mother's Day Weekend.  There are an average of 25 other permits issued throughout the year, with approximately 20 out of 25 used by demolition property sales.  The permits will increase in price in 2024 from $10.00 to $20.00.

  5. There was a lengthy discussion about proposed resolutions making changes to the operation of the Borough's Sports Fishing facility and Bay Park Marina.  An increase in fees is being considered with a change from $100.00 per foot to $120.00 per foot.

Commercial and Charter boats operate from the Sports Fishing Center only.  The existing charter boat preference may be suspended due to traffic congestion.

Two property owners spoke about their concerns with the proposed suspension of the preferential treatment and the way that slips are allocated for commercial and charter boats.

  6. Police Chief Jeff Christopher advised Council that the Department needs to replace seven protective vests, which will be funded by the Boscia Family Foundation.
