Borough Council: December 13

Council held the regularly scheduled sessions on Wednesday, December 13, 2023. The following issues of interest were addressed:

  1. A moment of silence was observed to honor the memory of Alana Mossier Smallwood who served for more than 20 years on the Avalon School Board.

  2. Mayor McCorriston administered the oath of office to Gregory (Chet) Johnson who was recently elected to serve a full term on Borough Council.

  3. A November fire in an unoccupied Avalon residence was safely extinguished with no damage to surrounding properties.  Several fire companies responded but the Avalon Volunteer Fire Company was first on the scene.  The Mayor and Council recognized members of the Fire Department, EMT, and Police who participated in extinguishing the fire.

  4. Council took action to make several changes to the operation of the Bay Park Marina and the Avalon Sport Fishing Center.  There will be a 25% increase in fees this year,  It is expected that bids for the reconstruction of Bay Park Marina will begin in the latter part of 2024.  Provisions are being made in the contracts for those leasing slips in the event that construction begins before the end of their leases.

  5. Approval was given to increase the fee for yard sale licenses from $10.00 to $20.00.  This includes the May Borough-wide yard sale sponsored by the Garden Club.

  6. A Class II Special Officer, Isla Meyer, has been hired.  She is currently attending the Police Academy.
